Giappichelli's history is intimately linked to that of Modesto, the man who founded it back in1921. For it is from the character and personality of its founder that the publishing house has drawn inspiration for all the choices that have occurred over the course of almost a century of its lifetime, and it is to him that it still draws upon today in its difficult daily challenges.
Modesto Giappichelli was a humble, caring person, fascinated by the intellectual world of the University of Turin, where he worked as a janitor. Humble, but intelligent. Modest, but creative. He wondered how he could approach the world of science and study that so attracted him. He began by having the luminaries of the time entrust him with their essays, articles and texts. He would proofread and study them in the meantime. Then he would bind and preserve them. So, a little at a time, at the University he became a benchmark for consistency, concentration and attention to detail. A true editor who was forming himself in those roaring years. The work he did was so appreciated by the university environment that on October 5th, together with his son Giuseppe, Modesto opened his first stationery store in Turin, right next to the Rector's Office. One of the most important publishing houses in Italy had just been born.
